Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy star Gary Oldman, had to swim in freezing cold Hampstead Ponds for his role as espionage elder George Smiley in the new film. ‘I couldn’t complain as there were 80-year-old geezers swimming away in there!’ he recalls.
‘My co-star, Benedict Cumberbatch, made me a promise that he would dive in first, even though he wasn’t filming that day.
‘He got out and said to the stills photographer, “Whatever you do, don’t tell Gary that it’s FREEZING!”’
